Hydroponics

Hydroponic growing means that plants are being grown with little to no soil. At the SunGarden Greenhouse, plants are grown year-round with the help of client workers from Southwest Opportunities Center, Inc. with the goal of providing our communities with pesticide-free, delicious produce in a safe, enriching and welcoming environment.

With a soil-based system, the plant gradually absorbs the nutrients. In a hydroponic system, the nutrients are absorbed directly into the roots. In our greenhouse, the tomato plants are placed in a pot with clay pebbles as a substrate to maximize nutrient absorption and help stabilize the plant as the roots need something to attach to. Nutrient-rich water is then consistently being circulated throughout the interconnected rows to provide the nutrients the plants need. This method of growing not only reduces nutrient and water loss but also gives the grower much more control over the growth of the plants and greatly diminishes the risks of plants that were to be grown in soil. Insect traps and predator species are used primarily to deter/ control insects within the greenhouse. We do occasionally use Neem Oil as needed to create an environment that deters pests.
